7/8/2023 0 Comments Go down together by jeff guinnThanks to newsreels, true crime magazines, and new-fangled wire services that transmitted scandalous photos of Bonnie smoking a cigar to every newspaper in the nation, the Barrow Gang members almost instantly became household names on a par with Charles Lindbergh, Jack Dempsey, and Babe Ruth. Their timing could not have been better - the Barrow Gang pulled its first heist in 1932 when most Americans, reeling from the Great Depression, were desperate for escapist entertainment. In Go Down Together: The True, Untold Story of Bonnie and Clyde, bestselling author Jeff Guinn combines exhaustive research with surprising, newly discovered material to tell the real tale of two kids from a filthy Dallas slum who fell in love and then willingly traded their lives for a brief interlude of excitement and, more important, fame. The real story is completely different - and far more fascinating. Previous books and films, including the brilliant 1967 movie starring Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway, have emphasized the supposed glamour of America's most notorious criminal couple, thus contributing to ongoing mythology. Forget everything you think you know about Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker.

7/8/2023 0 Comments Ethan ransom lisa kleypasIn contrast to the usual heroes as well Ethan is a little different. I loved Garrett’s independence, so often in historical romance novels the heroine is just waiting to be swept off her feet, so it was refreshing to have a leading character who is finding her own way in the world, as a doctor no less. Especially when the main character was one of my favourites from previous novels, Garrett Gibson. Having invested myself into the first 3 books in the series (and enjoying each and every one I might add!) it only seemed right that I give this fourth instalment a go. Note: This review is spoiler-free! Why did I pick it? As they face the menace of a treacherous government plot, Ethan is willing to take any risk for the love of the most extraordinary woman he’s ever known.” When the mission goes wrong, it will take all of Garrett’s skill and courage to save him. Despite their vow to resist each other after that sublime night, she is soon drawn into his most dangerous assignment yet. For one exhilarating night, they give in to their potent attraction before becoming strangers again.Īs a Ravenel by-blow spurned by his father, Ethan has little interest in polite society, yet he is captivated by the bold and beautiful Garrett. Ethan Ransom, a former detective for Scotland Yard, is as gallant as he is secretive, a rumoured assassin whose true loyalties are a mystery. Garrett Gibson, the only female physician in England, is as daring and independent as any man – why not take her pleasures like one? Yet she has never been tempted to embark on an affair, until now. I am so grateful this book landed in my lap when it did. Pen and paper is simply the method, but the reward is the real new depths of self-discovery, creativity, and intentionality for living. Vitruvius is famous for asserting in his book De architectura that a structure must exhibit the three qualities of firmitas, utilitas, venustas - that is, it must be solid, useful, beautiful. This text “influenced deeply from the Early Renaissance onwards artists, thinkers, and architects, among them Leon Battista Alberti (1404-72), Leonardo Da Vinci (1452-1519), and Michelangelo (1475-1564).” The next major book on architecture, Alberti’s reformulation of Ten Books, was not written until 1452. This work is the only surviving major book on architecture from classical antiquity. Likely Vitruvius is referring to Marcus Agrippa’s campaign of public repairs and improvements. In the preface of Book I, Vitruvius dedicates his writings so to give personal knowledge of the quality of buildings to the emperor. He has been called the world’s first engineer to be known by name. He likely served as chief of the ballista (senior officer of artillery) in charge of doctores ballistarum (artillery experts) and libratores who actually operated the machines. 15 BC, he was a Roman writer, architect and engineer, active in the 1st century BC.īy his own description Vitruvius served as a ballista (artilleryman), the third class of arms in the military offices. Marcus Vitruvius Pollio is the author of De architectura, known today as The Ten Books on Architecture, a treatise written of Latin and Greek on architecture, dedicated to the emperor Augustus.īorn c. Buried in the rest of this brick of a novel are some startlingly beautiful meditations on the motivations for and consequences of sexual assault, and what the accusation that someone has committed violence towards a woman renders it permissible to do to that person. But in one respect, The Twelve deepens questions raised in its predecessor. Reading it over the weekend, I can see why: the number of characters and timelines makes Game of Thrones look like a Garfield cartoon, the mythology collapses into mystic psychobabble, and the novel eschews moral questions in favor of action sequences. But the sequel, The Twelve, which came out last fall, seemed to garner a quieter reception. Justin Cronin’s The Passage, a post-apocalyptic vampire thriller with similar oral history elements to World War Z, was one of the phenomena of the summer of 2010, read by many, immediately optioned by Hollywood, and much-discussed as part of the larger vampire trend. Over six months, they donated about $50,000, and Chicago businessman Marshall Field III contributed the rest of the $60,000 price. The state’s children helped raise the money. Then in 1943, the owners offered to sell the copy to the state of Illinois for $60,000 (about $950,000 in 2021 dollars) so that it could be made accessible to the public for generations to come. When Everett received the copy of the speech, he bound it in a book along with a copy of his own address to be sold at the Metropolitan Sanitary Fair in New York City. Everett later wrote Lincoln that, “I should be glad, if I could flatter myself that I came as near to the central idea of the occasion, in two hours, as you did in two minutes.”Įverett asked the president for a handwritten copy of his address so that it could be sold to raise money to care for sick and wounded soldiers.
